About Porn (Yes, This is Safe For Work)

adult-entertainment-expo-2

Here comes a touchy subject, no pun intended: Porn. An industry that generates a mass amount of money, merchandise, turns people into celebrities, and attracts people to annual conventions. All this being said, do Porn enthusiasts qualify as a fan community?

To further expand on this, again with no pun intended, Porn comes in many forms. While a good amount is just hard core gratifying material, there are those who like to create pornographic material to be artistic so as to satisfy the mind and the appreciation for the human form more so than just to be gratifying or to fulfill a fetish. If we are being realistic, here, many fans who are passionate about certain public figures harbor some feelings of, vocal or secretive, lust toward who they like, and can often create some saucy fan fictions that would qualify as pornographic in nature.

DON-JON-QuadLet us say that there are people who watch or read this material, in magazines such as Playboy or Penthouse, who can ingest the material and not, for lack of better terminology, pleasure themselves to it. Even when the consumer does gratify themselves to the material, as long as the activity is not consuming their lives or destroying their relationships (I’m thinking of the movie “Don Jon” here), then do they qualify as fans of the material?

A last point to consider here touches on, and sorry for more unintended puns, are the Porn stars and the industry that is focused on them. These performers become celebrities with their own products, they star in reality shows, they start businesses on the side, they have fans line up at conventions to meet them in the flesh (more puns!), and they even use their status or services to give back to charity.

So, dear readers, putting aside your feelings on Porn itself, do you think it qualifies as a fandom worthy industry?
