Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a new fan coming into social media and social tech, 2016 is going to be another amazing year for fans. If you are trying to interact with fellow fans, or even your favorite content makers in pop culture, here are some things you will want in your arsenal:
- Twitter – Duh, right? Any well-versed fan will know how amazing Twitter is when you are in a fan community. You can find and converse with other fans on here, as well as tweet your faves. Here are some tips: If you are trying to find people with similar interests to you, search for regular words or hashtags relative to what you like via their advanced search. If you want a celebrity’s (positive) attention on Twitter, try to tweet them within 10 minutes of them tweeting something (not a link to an Instagram post, as they likely just posted it from there and cross-posted it to Twitter). Also, change your Twitter name or handle to something relevant to the celebrity in their personal life, like the name of a pet or a nickname they gave themselves/people around them. Having a photo of yourself is also helpful, too!
- YouTube – Filming a heart felt vlog or making a creative video spoofing or recreating something in pop culture is an awesome way to gain the attention of other fans and your favorites in pop culture. As long as it is tastefully done and you have a network of peers to share it, this is a fun way to gain some eyes on your display of fandom. Since you likely have free movie editing software on your computer, or can obtain it on the cheap (iMovie as an app is available for $5 for the iPad and iPhone), this is also a great way to stretch your legs creatively.
- Periscope – While you can chat on Periscope, this is also a great way to see the point of view of a celebrity or another fan (especially if they are at an event you want to be at). Even if you don’t download the app, sometimes you can just watch a Periscope feed via a link cross-posted on Twitter! Just make sure you catch it live.
- Notifications – Just some extra tips you’ll want so you don’t have to stay glued to your screen 24/7. One basic way to be able to know what is going on with whatever your fandom is fixated on, set a Google alert so you are up to date on news. Aside from getting Twitter notifications from certain parties, be sure to make a list of your favorites to follow on Twitter so you can sift through a sea of tweets to see what you want and hear from who you want. Be sure to also go to the official websites of things you like and sign up for official newsletters. Sometimes, these emails will contain exclusive discount or pre-sale codes!
